COPPA Notice

Last Updated: May 22, 2026

BrainLea is an online educational platform offering live coding classes and courses for kids aged 7 to 15. Because we interact with children under the age of 13, we comply fully with the United States Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

This COPPA Notice explains our practices regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information from children under 13, and details how parents and legal guardians can manage their children's data.

1. Verifiable Parental Consent

BrainLea does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13 without first obtaining verifiable parental consent.

  • For Free Trial Classes: We require the parent or legal guardian to sign up with their own email address. We verify parental consent by sending an activation link to the parent's email.
  • For Paid Programs: We verify parental consent through a secure checkout process utilizing credit card validation or bank details via our payment gateway (Stripe), which is a federally approved method of obtaining verifiable parental consent under COPPA.

2. What Information Do We Collect From Children?

When a parent registers a child and grants consent, we collect only the information necessary to provide our coding curriculum and interactive features:

Student Profile Information

We collect a student nickname/first name and the child's age or grade level. We do not collect the child's last name or email address directly. All account management and scheduling communications are routed to the parent's email.

Classroom Video & Audio Streams

Our classes are conducted live online. During a class, students may share their webcam and microphone to interact with the teacher and peers. These live video and audio streams are broadcast in real-time only inside the secure, password-protected virtual classroom.

Classroom Recordings

We record live coding sessions for safety, quality assurance, and teacher evaluation. Parents can also request recordings so their child can review lessons. These recordings are stored in secure cloud systems with restricted access.

Student Code & Projects

We store the code, games, and digital applications built by students. This is necessary to save their progress and allow them to run, edit, and demonstrate their projects.

Classroom Chat & Interactions

We collect written text chats submitted by students to teachers or classmates within our secure classroom interface during live lessons.

3. How Do We Use Children's Information?

We use the collected information solely for the following educational and safety purposes:

  • Conducting live, interactive coding lessons with certified mentors.
  • Saving student progress and maintaining their coding projects code repository.
  • Ensuring classroom safety, security, and child protection.
  • Improving our educational tools, courses, and platform performance.

We never use children's personal information for behavioral advertising or marketing profiles. We do not sell or lease children's personal data.

4. Sharing of Children's Information

We limit the sharing of children's information strictly to trusted third-party services that support platform operations (e.g., Firebase for hosting and database management, Stripe for secure billing, Zoom/Jitsi for streaming classrooms). These service providers are contractually bound to maintain strict confidentiality and security.

With explicit parent permission, a student's coding project may be published on our showcase gallery for other students to interact with. Parents can toggle the visibility of projects at any time.

5. Parent Rights & Management Controls

Parents retain full control over their child's personal data at all times. You have the right to:

  • Review: View the exact personal information we have collected from your child.
  • Delete: Request that we delete all collected information and close the child's account.
  • Restrict: Instruct us to stop further collection or use of your child's data (please note that restricting video/audio streaming may limit participation in live interactive coding classes).
  • Revoke Consent: Withdraw your consent at any time, terminating our authorization to process your child's data.

To exercise any of these rights, please email us directly from your registered parent email address at privacy@brainlea.com with the subject line "COPPA Parental Request".
